Gaps In Between Teeth

Gaps in between teeth

Gaps in between teeth are not uncommon, there are a number of causes, and dental treatments to take care of gaps in teeth.

When baby teeth come through it’s normal to have spaces, into adulthood these spaces very often close naturally when more adult teeth grow through.

Causes of gaps between teeth

In Perfect Smile Dental Implant Centre Hungary we refer to a gap or space in between any two teeth as diastema.

This condition is very common in between the upper front teeth.

One of the most familiar causes of holes in between teeth is known as a fraenum.

A fraenum is a tiny piece of tissue that connects teeth together and keeps both of the top teeth apart.

Lift up your top lip, using your tongue push upwards you should feel the fraenum.

There are other causes of openings in between teeth and these are:

  • Natural change: As we mentioned its commonplace for baby teeth to have gaps, this space allows the adult teeth to get through. As the adult teeth come through first there are spaces. As more come through in particular canine teeth, these spaces are closed.
  • Teeth missing: Children in some cases, can have teeth missing in their jawbone, that means an open space. In addition these teeth get stuck in the jawbone and don’t appear, this leaves a gap.
  • Smaller teeth: Its possible that a small percentage of children and adults can just have smaller teeth, this leads to gaps.
  • Extra teeth: In a small amount of cases, extra teeth in the jawbone stop others coming through, creating a gap.
  • Lingual fraenum: The lingual fraenum attaches to the tongue and to the bottom of your mouth. In some cases, the fraenum becomes restricted or tongue tied. This can cause gaps to appear in the lower jaws front teeth.
  • Oversized jaws: Oversized jaws are uncommon but they do create spaces because they don’t fit properly together with the teeth.

Can gaps in teeth close themselves

As natural growth progresses those gaps in teeth close by themselves, baby teeth gaps are normal, so most of them close over time.

As more baby teeth begin to come through the gums (6-9 months) the front teeth could have a space, the lingual fraenum may be joined to a lower part of the gum.

After about 12 months the lingual fraenum will be shorter.

So more teeth should come through and the gaps should close.

Issues that arise because of gapped teeth

There are issues that arise because of gapped teeth, for example some people are very conscious and may not feel like smiling because of embarrassment.

Where teeth are crooked or crowded the front teeth may have a large space that prevents more teeth coming through, causing issues with a person’s bite.

Treatment options that include:

Veeners: Veeners are a composite or porcelain cover that is placed over a tooth.

Veneers are ideal in situations where there is a small gap because they are a little bit wider than your natural teeth.

They are used by dentists to cover the space and are permanently stuck over the affected teeth.

Crowns: Dental crowns are an even more permanent way to fill gaps in between teeth.

They are manufactured from porcelain, ceramic or porcelain fused to metal.

Crowns are a popular way to fill those unsightly gaps, the shape and functionality of affected teeth are immeasurably improved.

Composite fillings: Spaces in between teeth can be filled in using a composite bonding tooth coloured material.

Dental implants: Dental implants are a titanium screw that secured into the jawbone to support a denture, crown or a bridge of new teeth.

Other treatment options

Clear aligners: Clear aligners or invisible braces fit over the teeth where gaps are.

They hold them in place while they move slowly back into position.

Fraenectomy: Fraenectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the lingual fraenum that caused the issue in the first place.

Bridge: A dental bridge is a form of dental restoration whereby it joins up crowns and prosthetic teeth together to take the place of one or more missing teeth.

Oral surgery: Oral surgery would be an option in the more severe cases.

The surgeon will surgically remove teeth that are buried, or it can be made easier for teeth to come out.

Oral surgery can be useful where there are problems with the jaw, or to enhance the success of orthodontic treatment.

Fixed appliance: A fixed appliance refers to braces, braces are affixed to front teeth, wires then used to drag teeth together and close the spaces.

Removable appliance: A removable appliance for example a plate can assist in moving teeth together more closely.
